Combat Anxious Feelings with Essential Oils

Original Post: https://blog.zijainternational.com/combat-anxious-feelings-with-essential-oils/

Anxious feelings can strike at any moment. During a big test, driving in congested traffic, while completing a demanding work project, a trip to the dentist, or simply due to the everyday stresses of life. Unfortunately, these anxious feelings can reduce your focus and drive to accomplish goals set for the new year. Don’t fret, essential oils are highly-prized for their ability to modify our biochemistry and encourage a more relaxed state. Here are five essential oils that have clinical evidence to support their use in reducing occasional anxious feelings.

Lavender is considered the Swiss army knife of essential oils for good reason. As my 9-year-old daughter says, “Lavender is good for everything.” Inhalation of lavender is relaxing and calming, but the clinical evidence suggests that ingestion of lavender is also highly effective. Multiple clinical studies demonstrate that taking about 2 drops of lavender essential oil in a capsule significantly improves anxious feelings.[i]

Citrus essential oils are known for their uplifting aroma. They also promote a more relaxed state. Three clinical studies suggest that inhaling orange essential oil in the waiting room prior to a dental visit reduced anxiety associated with the visit.[ii] Another effective citrus essential oil is bergamot. Bergamot essential oil profoundly influences the nervous system to correct mild mood disturbances and reduce occasional anxious feelings according to clinical research.

Just about every woman feels some anxiety about giving birth, especially first-time mothers. An eight-year clinical study of the use of essential oils as part of midwifery practice suggests that the topical application of clary sage essential oil in a carrier oil helps reduce anxious and fearful feelings during labor.

Lemongrass essential oil is known to support oral health, aid normal immune function, and repel pesky insects. It is also helpful to improve mood state according to clinical research. Scientists reported that inhalation of 3-6 drops of lemongrass essential oil rapidly improved anxious feelings.

Don’t let anxious feelings prevent realizing your goals this year. Inhale some oils, relax, and achieve. In general, blends of calming and relaxing essential oils produce more rapid and long lasting results. Try inhaling a combination of a few of the above essential oils when you feel anxious and experience the calming effects that aromas have.

Don’t Skip the Gym

Original Post: https://blog.zijainternational.com/dont-skip-the-gym/

When the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, the swirling of emotions probably feels like being pumped, inspired, and prepared to take on the new year. The next morning, however, might be a different story—and it goes beyond the next morning to the coming weeks that will make or break your goal. Life sets in, and you get tired from life pulling on the corner of your shirt, nagging you to get things done that are minimal in nature yet monumental in the moment.

As far as health and wellness goals go, an important aspect of that journey is working out. Consistently hitting the gym and cranking out meaningful workouts seems so attainable on the first of January. But on January 15th? No thanks. So I think it’s safe to say that you will want to (more than once I’m sure) tell yourself to skip the gym. To stay home, stay in bed, or stay in your comfort zone.

If you’re feeling guilty right now because you know I am talking about you, don’t. We all do it! The best way to fly over this hurdle is to set ourselves up with preparation that will motivate you to make it to the gym, and sweat it all out. Here are some tips for how you can prepare to stop skipping the gym:

Get Yourself a Gym Buddy
This is crucial because going to the gym alone is not only intimidating, but also creates a lot of give. You don’t push yourself as hard, don’t stay as long as you should, and don’t motivate yourself as good as a friend can. Find someone who shares your same general gym goals and go together. You will not only feel less alone in such a scary place as a public gym, but you can push each other and make goals together—making any goal, small or large, feel that much more attainable.

Plan Your Workouts before Hitting the Gym
Prepare yourself and get in the zone well before you make it to the gym. Get on a schedule or have a circuit of workouts on rotation that you do on specific days of the week. This way, you have an end game, and know what you need to do to get there. If you are like most people and not well-versed on gym circuits or rotations off the top of your head, one of the easiest ways to find info about this is on Instagram. Follow a fitness account where they post specific sets for specific muscle groups. Just follow along and get tips on form and using the equipment correctly!

Eat Food, Drink Water
Benefitting from the gym is all about going as hard as you can and pushing yourself. But, if you have no fuel in the tank, you are going to exhaust yourself and put your body in a dangerous spot. Now, this doesn’t mean you need to mow down a fast food buffet before working out. Prepare your body with foods that are healthy, natural, and easy on the stomach. These kinds of foods will give you the necessary energy your muscles need. Be sure to bring a water bottle and drink water throughout the day. Staying properly hydrated will help you think more clearly, and will prepare your body to sweat.

Build the Person You Want to Be

Original Post: https://blog.zijainternational.com/build-the-person-you-want-to-be/

Setting the Goal: When setting my goals, I will always put myself in an environment where I am not distracted, I can focus, I can hear myself think, and most important, I can visualize myself achieving my goals. What does it look like? What does it feel like? What does it even smell like? When you take the time to envision what this will be like, you will take the necessary steps to achieve that vision.

What goals do I set? The core buckets I focus on in my life are: Faith, Family, Finances, Fitness, Friendship, Favor (service, kindness, being a miracle to others) and Field (work). These are the areas that are most important to me and when my goals are met in these categories, I can experience the happiness I’ve been seeking.

How do I set my goals? When you are setting your goals, putting yourself in the right mindset, and allowing inspiration to flow, it can quickly become overwhelming. You feel like you have to move a mountain in order to achieve, when in reality, let’s start with an achievable scoop of dirt! I go through each of these buckets and set 1-2 Wildly Important Goals (WIGS) for each one.

Writing your goals down. If you’re going to take the time to think about goals, set goals, and envision a life accomplishing your goals, then you have to look at every variable that will increase the probability of success. Write them down! Some crazy statistics*:

  • 25% of people abandon their New Year’s Goals after the first week of the year.
  • 60% abandon them within six months.
  • 5% of those who lose weight on a diet keep it off; 95% will regain it.

Life moves fast and changes happen unexpectedly; it is very easy to say, “I’ll get around to it.” Writing goals down creates a commitment to the most important person, yourself. It gives you direction, purpose, and an end game. It keeps what it is that you’re wanting at the forefront of your mind. Remember, “It’s a Dream until you write it down, and then it becomes a Goal!”

Learning how to set your goals is just the beginning and the simplest part to the process. Where the rubber meets the road is in the execution. Here are some simple steps to help execute the behavior needed to achieve your goals! To remember them, I use a simple acronym F.L.E.A.:  Focus, Leverage, Engagement, Accountability.

Discipline 1: Focus on Wildly Important Goals (WIG)

Choose 1-2 (but no more) Wildly Important Goals in the form of, “Change X to Y by this date.” and then focus on achieving the goal.

“The sun’s scattered rays are too weak to start a fire, but once you focus them with a magnifying glass they are capable of starting a fire in seconds”

Discipline 2: Leverage – Acting on Lead Measures

Choose your lead measures in the form of simple, measurable actions you can do each day that will help you reach your goals. These are predictive and become the KEY leveraging points in obtaining your goal.

Discipline 3: Engagement – Keep a Compelling Scorecard

“The highest level of performance always comes from people who are emotionally engaged and the highest level of engagement comes from knowing the score.” If you don’t know you are winning or losing, your most likely on your way to losing. Ask yourself regularly, “AM I WINNING?”

Discipline 4: Create a Cadence of Accountability

Accountability: Hold yourself accountable to your lead measures. If needed, find a partner to help keep you accountable.

Cadence: This needs to be done at least weekly. Find the right rhythm and stick to it.

“The magic in accomplishing goals is in discipline, consistency and the cadence of accountability.”

As we begin 2018, try practicing these disciplines by setting and accomplishing your health and wellness goals. Finding an opportunity with extra incentive can help with your goal engagement.
