Start & Finish Strong

Original Post: https://blog.zijainternational.com/start-finish-strong/

What an exciting time of the year, the beginning! We all have different experiences and mark ups in our past but today is a new day, a clean slate, a fresh canvas! A new year which we can begin to write the next chapter of our very own book. With this page, what do we want to be able to look back and read about? How about success, triumph, positive outlooks, gratitude, love, service, and accomplishments?  Doesn’t sound like a bad way to begin, right? Well, let’s do this, together!

Many people begin exciting ventures at the mark of a new calendar year, but let’s not just start it, let’s also finish it out strong. Well, this sounds enticing and tempting. The difference between talking about it and accomplishing it, is to actually do it.

Today, right now, let’s get out a blank sheet of paper and begin to write what your top priorities are in your life at this very moment. Family? Fitness? Financial security? Regardless of the goal, we need an action plan in achieving it. Once our priorities and goals are listed, let’s then begin to draw up an action plan.

No one has ever regretted the decision to live a healthier life. What can you do to live just a little better than before? Supplementation is a great key. If fitness is anywhere on that list, incorporating some daily, healthier, soda-alternative, hydrating product would be a remarkable start! The better you feel, the more likely you are prepared to take care of your loved ones and immediate family. Too often I see people, moms especially, who put everyone before themselves. They end up running around out of gas, both emotionally and physically.  You need to take charge and grab the reigns of truly living the Natural Health Revolution.

Begin to incorporate a daily or weekly workout routine to boost endorphins for mood, health, and physical fitness. This can be at home, on the road, through a new hobby, or with an outdoor activity (my preference), or at the gym. Start to read labels, write down meals eaten, supplement with high quality products, and begin a tracking period to compare how you feel throughout the day and week. What things improve our health? What can we do better? I encourage all of you to add one thing to that plate, the most important, taking care of your beautiful self!

Combat Anxious Feelings with Essential Oils

Original Post: https://blog.zijainternational.com/combat-anxious-feelings-with-essential-oils/

Anxious feelings can strike at any moment. During a big test, driving in congested traffic, while completing a demanding work project, a trip to the dentist, or simply due to the everyday stresses of life. Unfortunately, these anxious feelings can reduce your focus and drive to accomplish goals set for the new year. Don’t fret, essential oils are highly-prized for their ability to modify our biochemistry and encourage a more relaxed state. Here are five essential oils that have clinical evidence to support their use in reducing occasional anxious feelings.

Lavender is considered the Swiss army knife of essential oils for good reason. As my 9-year-old daughter says, “Lavender is good for everything.” Inhalation of lavender is relaxing and calming, but the clinical evidence suggests that ingestion of lavender is also highly effective. Multiple clinical studies demonstrate that taking about 2 drops of lavender essential oil in a capsule significantly improves anxious feelings.[i]

Citrus essential oils are known for their uplifting aroma. They also promote a more relaxed state. Three clinical studies suggest that inhaling orange essential oil in the waiting room prior to a dental visit reduced anxiety associated with the visit.[ii] Another effective citrus essential oil is bergamot. Bergamot essential oil profoundly influences the nervous system to correct mild mood disturbances and reduce occasional anxious feelings according to clinical research.

Just about every woman feels some anxiety about giving birth, especially first-time mothers. An eight-year clinical study of the use of essential oils as part of midwifery practice suggests that the topical application of clary sage essential oil in a carrier oil helps reduce anxious and fearful feelings during labor.

Lemongrass essential oil is known to support oral health, aid normal immune function, and repel pesky insects. It is also helpful to improve mood state according to clinical research. Scientists reported that inhalation of 3-6 drops of lemongrass essential oil rapidly improved anxious feelings.

Don’t let anxious feelings prevent realizing your goals this year. Inhale some oils, relax, and achieve. In general, blends of calming and relaxing essential oils produce more rapid and long lasting results. Try inhaling a combination of a few of the above essential oils when you feel anxious and experience the calming effects that aromas have.

Natural Ingredients for a New, Energized You

Original Post: https://blog.zijainternational.com/natural-ingredients-for-a-new-energized-you/

During this time of year, many of us make resolutions to improve our health; this typically includes a new diet and an enhanced routine or workout program. Adding additional exercise or movement to our day can challenge energy reserves and leave us wanting a bit more drive and stamina for the “new you” to tackle the new year.

With this in mind, here are a few natural ingredients to consider to support this needed energy lift so you can keep your resolutions:

  • D-Ribose: D-ribose is a 5-carbon sugar that is involved in energy production in the body. It can help increase ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) the “molecular energy currency” of the body and support healthy cardiovascular function. It also has been shown to improve muscular strength when used in conjunction with a workout program.
  • Natural Caffeine: Synthetic caffeine is typically absorbed quicker in the digestive system giving a spike and crash effect often referred to as the “jitters”. Natural caffeine provides a cleaner more stable release for a better-rounded experience.
  • L-Arginine: One of the biggest benefits of L-arginine is its ability to improve blood flow and circulation. This improvement can have multiple benefits including improved immune function, brain clarity, fertility, and detoxification support. In addition, an increase in blood flow and oxygen will support performance and stamina in your new workout routine.
  • Electrolytes: All humans need electrolytes for the body to function properly. Electrolytes interact with each other and the cells in the tissues, nerves, and muscles. A balance of different electrolytes is necessary for healthy body function and are crucial to maintain muscle contractions and output.

In addition to healthy ingredients, many would argue the most important nutrient you can include in your routine is water. However, not just any water, water that is free from impurities and toxins.

The human body is 75-80% water, with key organs like the brain, lungs, heart, liver, and kidneys being at or above 75% water. Every cell and organ in the human body depends upon proper hydration to function efficiently. As part of the blood, water carries oxygen to the cells and organs. Purified water also serves to lubricate and cushion joints, regulate metabolism and body temperature, facilitate waste removal, support cell growth, and reduce the heart’s workload. All things that can lend to a successful transition and completion of your 2018 goals.

As you start the new year, make an effort to add these and other healthy ingredients in your routines and activities. Stay nourished, hydrated, and active and you will be able to reach an improved, more energized you!

Strength Training for Bone Health

Blog Post: https://blog.zijainternational.com/strength-training-for-bone-health/

Unfortunately, by age 25, our body’s bone health has reached its peak in bone mass. Every year after 25, our bone density has the tendency to decline which can then affect our physical activity levels as we age—putting us at risk for osteoporosis and higher pain levels—unless we take proactive steps in slowing this process.

My grandparents are both a year away from 80 years young, and at their age, they are the most active people I know. In fact, they run circles around me and I feel I’m in decent shape for 40! These two characters mow lawns regularly, clean houses for extra cash, paint walls, babysit little children, and help every family member who needs assistance with daunting physical work. The end result? They are strong, healthy, active, happy, and feel great. Their bones are strong and support the lifestyle they maintain at 79!

According to recent studies, two-thirds of individuals over 70 years old who suffer a bone fracture die within the next 12 months. Thankfully, we can change these sad statistics by living a preventative lifestyle and implementing certain tools to strengthen our bones. Calcium, of course, is crucial and can be consumed in our diets with real foods—vitamin D is another good source to establish bone health.

The quickest way to improve bone density (my personal favorite) is, you guessed it, strength training! Weight bearing exercises help through increasing your metabolism, helping you sleep, improving your brain function, improving your physique, and last but not least, maintaining and improving your bone structure. If our bones are strong, they can support the muscles needed to be active, have better posture, provide less chronic pain, and live longer, healthier lives.

Being Successful in Nutrition & Fitness as You Travel

Blog Post: https://blog.zijainternational.com/being-successful-in-nutrition-fitness-as-you-travel/

One of the most difficult things we can do is attempt to be conscientious about our health and wellness as we travel. Lucky for you, it’s easier than you might think! In fact, all it takes is being well-prepared and incorporating proper nutrition and physical activity into your travel plans. Here are 7 easy tips to help you maintain your journey to a healthier lifestyle before you embark on your next flight.

Tip #1: Load up that carryon! Assemble yourself an arsenal of healthy snacks like fruit, nuts, prepackaged protein (tuna fish, chicken), raw yams cut up like carrots, chopped jicama in a snack baggie, oatmeal, or breakfast packaged into individual serving sizes for each morning (assuming breakfast isn’t provided). When you get hungry, break out these snacks and you will be better equipped to skip the airport candy bars!

Tip #2: Pack your resistance bands. They are lightweight, take up very little space, and can provide total body workouts right from your hotel room. Band workouts are also great for keeping your body supple after long travel hours and keeping you energized throughout your trip.

Tip #3: Healthy, nutritional products are a must! Don’t forget your individual packets of healthy fitness supplements, nutritional products, and high-quality protein bars!  They will definitely enhance your travel experience by keeping your immune system awake and ready to take on whatever your trip holds!

Tip #4: Eat smart while you are on the run. If you have breakfast provided in the hotel, stick to eggs, salsa, fruit, and a healthy carb such as oatmeal/cinnamon or an English muffin. Avoid carb-heavy meals like waffles, pastries, and juice—waffles are the equivalent to consuming donuts for breakfast. And remember, too much of anything can be harmful to your health. If you are consuming more than a daily recommended dose of sugar at breakfast alone, you are doomed to have cravings and most likely eating more throughout the day—which, in turn, will affect your energy and fat loss goals. If you must eat out, try ordering grilled meats, lowering high starch carbs, and adding fruit to help lower sugar cravings.

Tip #5: Book a hotel near a grocery store so you have access to healthy food. Stock up the fridge inside your hotel room with these good foods and avoid the nutritional dangers of eating out. If you are unable to pack fruit to your final destination, purchase it on your way from the airport to your hotel. If you are prepared, you will succeed!

Tip #6: Stay close to a gym if one is not provided by your hotel. Mixing up your routine is always a great idea because it keeps your body adapting. Visiting new or hotel gyms will sometimes force us to change up our workouts, causing our bodies to guess what may come next. Don’t be surprised if you get muscle soreness just by simply trying new machines and exercises in a gym that you are unfamiliar with.

Tip #7: Suck it in. While sitting on a long flight, shuttle, or car ride, try squeezing your glutes and holding in your core, pulling your belly button towards the back of your spine for several minutes at a time. If you are stuck in a sedentary position, you might as well get a workout in that doesn’t require any additional time commitment. This can be a very discreet, quiet, and fun challenge. The person next to you will have no idea that you are burning double the calories that they are just by “sucking it in.”

The next time that you travel, try any one of these and see if your trip is a little less stressful by having some great tools at your fingertips!
